Korkyt Ata university contributes to the «Save the Aral» environmental campaign

Kyzylorda Korkyt Ata university supported and actively participated in the «Save the Aral» environmental campaign, held as part of the head of state's initiative to plant saxaul trees on the dried-up bed of the Aral Sea.

The large-scale event was organized by the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea (IFAS) and Freedom Bank Kazakhstan JSC. The main goal of the campaign is to contribute to ecosystem restoration by planting 18,000 black saxaul seedlings on an area of 60 hectares of the dried-up Aral Sea bed.

The event was attended by Marat Narbayev, Deputy Director of the Executive Directorate of IFAS for RK; Muslim Zhienbayev, representative of the IFAS Executive Committee; Aidoss Zhetpisbay, Head of the Kyzylorda Branch of Freedom Bank Kazakhstan JSC; representatives of the Kyzylorda Regional Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Management; Ainur Rysbayeva, Chairperson of the public association «Turan Lowland – Aral Sea»; Ardak Zhetebayev, Head of the Communal State Institution «Aral Forest and Wildlife Protection»; as well as scientists, master's students, and students of Korkyt Ata University. The campaign from the university was led by Orazkhan Aidarov, a senior lecturer in the «Biology, Geography and Chemistry» educational program and an ecologist.

According to specialists, the total area of the dried-up Aral Sea bed is about 6 million hectares, of which 2.8 million hectares are located in Kazakhstan. Nowadays, afforestation and land reclamation work has been carried out on 791,000 hectares (79%) of the sea bed. This includes planting seedlings on 154.7 thousand hectares, sowing on 443 thousand hectares and promoting natural growth on 164.3 thousand hectares.

As part of the environmental campaign, university students and master's students got acquainted with the current state of the sea bed, practically studied methods of manual saxaul planting and planting with special equipment and contributed to nature restoration.

This initiative not only enhances the environmental awareness of the youth, but also represents one of the important steps aimed at mitigating the consequences of the ecological disaster in Aral region.
