Archaeologists have established that the settlement of Zhankent was built in the VII century
Archaeological excavations at the site of the medieval city of Zhankent in the Kyzylorda region continued this year. The researchers, using the methods of natural sciences, determined the absolute age of Zhankent. This was stated at a press conference in the Regional Communications Service by the head of the scientific center "Archeology and Ethnography", Candidate of Historical Sciences Azilkhan Tazhikeev.
"If previous sources said that the ancient city was built in the IX-XI centuries, then new research has shown that the foundation of the city was laid in the XII century. The monument has been excavated in four places today, archaeologists are conducting research with the help of modern innovative equipment. The found exhibits will be processed in the laboratory of archaeological research and transferred to the Regional Museum of Local History," Azilkhan Tazhikeyev said.
It should be noted that the scientific leaders of the project are Doctor of Archaeological Sciences, Professor Heinrich Harke, Candidate of Historical Sciences Azilkhan Tazhekeev and Candidate of Historical Sciences, Professor Irina Arzhantseva. Students of the University of Tubingen, the Higher School of Economics of Russia, Moscow State University and the Korkyt Ata Kyzylorda University, as well as 35 scientists take part in the research work.
