ECO-HOUR DEDICATED TO WATER RESOURCE CONSERVATION

This year, eco-hours on the theme "Save water – save the future" were held in
18 universities across Kazakhstan. Over 4,000 students participated in the offline format of the event. Besides, students from 120 universities and colleges, as well as 700 schoolchildren, joined online broadcast.

Seilbek Nurymbetov, Chairman of the Committee for regulation, protection, and water resources use of the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation of the Republic of Kazakhstan, participated in the eco-hour.

As part of the eco-hour, guests were presented with a book exhibition and scientific projects by students. Modern drip irrigation technologies, as well as methods for re-purification and recycling of water for efficient use in car washes, generated particular interest. Participants also visited the university's water management museum.

Following this, Seilbek Sergazyuly met with university students and faculty. Dana Abdrasheva, Board Member of the university - Vice-Rector for academic affairs, delivered an opening speech, noting that the educational institution places special emphasis on fostering environmental culture by combining education and science. She also reported on the conduct of scientific research and the implementation of several projects in the field of water resource management and ecology.

Seilbek Nurymbetov elaborated on issues of efficient water use, the construction and modernization of reservoirs, canal repair, and environmental protection in his report. He also shared plans for preventing water scarcity. According to the plan for this year, the construction of new reservoirs with a volume of 900 million cubic meters and the capital repair of 746 canals are envisaged. Furthermore, active work on the restoration of the North Aral Sea was highlighted.

The ecological campaign "Clearwater", conducted as part of the "Clean Kazakhstan" initiative, was also recognized. Over 13,000 people participated in the campaign, and 300 tons of waste were removed. Besides, the sources of 30 springs, which are sources of life, were cleaned.

The meeting was also attended by Darkhan Kainberdiyev, Director of the Department of Tariff Policy Regulation of the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation of the Republic of Kazakhstan, who shared his views on water resource conservation.     

During the environmental hour, students majoring in "Water Management" asked their questions and received specific answers from industry specialists.

At the conclusion of the event, a number of faculty and students who have contributed to the industry were awarded by the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Environmental educational hours not only shape students' professional outlook but also contribute to enhancing their environmental responsibility. At the same time, it was noted that this is one of the important initiatives that promote the development of the water management industry in the country by combining science and practice.
