MEETING WITH UNESCO EXPERTS

A meeting was held at the Korkyt Ata Kyzylorda University with international experts José Bernardo Rodrigues Brilha and Soma Saediyounesi, who arrived to evaluate the potential of the "Aral Geopark" for its inclusion in the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network.

The guests were welcomed by Dana Abdrasheva, Vice-Rector for academic affairs, who gave them a tour of the Madelkhan Nalibayev Water Management Museum. 

During the meeting, university scholars presented the institution's research and educational activities aimed at developing the Aral Geopark. Key aspects of the university's work were highlighted, including the study of Aral Sea region's ecosystem, the implementation of international scientific projects, the development of environmental education, and the training of qualified specialists.

Nowadays, the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network includes 241 sites across 51 countries. Currently, 14 applications for membership are under consideration. As part of this process, international experts are conducting a primary evaluation of the "Aral Geopark" territory from July 6 to July 13. Based on the results, a professional report will be prepared regarding the site's potential for inclusion in the international network.

In the case of a positive decision, the "Aral Geopark" will become the first geopark in Kazakhstan to receive UNESCO status. This will help to create new prospects for developing the region's tourism potential, expanding scientific research, and improving the quality of life for the local population.
