THE LEGACY OF THE SYRDARYA REGION MEDIEVAL TOWNS AND THE GOLDEN HORDE ERA WAS DISCUSSED

A round-table discussion on the topic The Towns of Syrdarya and the Golden Horde was held at Korkyt Ata University.

The main aim of the academic meeting was to examine the historical and cultural significance of the medieval towns of Aral Sea region, to discuss archaeological sites and the historical heritage of the Golden Horde era based on new academic research, and to analyse work on the study of the region’s archaeological heritage.

University lecturers, staff from research centres and researchers took part in the round-table discussion. The event was moderated by Nurlybek Mynzhas, Head of the Scientific research coordination department.

During the meeting, academics presented papers on the formation and historical significance of the medieval towns of the Aral Sea region, new research into the historical and cultural heritage of the Golden Horde era in the Aral Sea region, the economic development of medieval towns based on archaeological finds, and the results of the 2025 archaeological excavations.

“At the international symposium held on 19 May in Astana, the Head of State, Tokayev Kassym-Jomart Kemelevich, specifically highlighted the Golden Horde’s place in the history of the Great Steppe civilisation and emphasised Kazakhstan’s historical continuity as the successor to the Golden Horde. This provides a powerful impetus for an in-depth study of our country’s historical heritage. The event on the theme The Cities of the Syr Darya and the Golden Horde, taking place today at Korkyt Ata Kyzylorda University, is also of immense significance. After all, the Syr Darya region formed part of the Ulus of Jochi and was directly linked to the political, economic, social and cultural processes of that time. Therefore, a comprehensive study of the Golden Horde era legacy and the scholarly analysis of our historical values is one of the most important tasks of our time”, — noted Nurlybek Mynzhas.

At the conclusion of the round table, participants emphasised the importance of systematising the results of scientific research, preserving the archaeological heritage and conducting a comprehensive study of the historical and cultural sites in the Syr Darya region.
