SEMINAR AND TRAINING ON CLIMATE RISK ASSESSMENT HELD AT KORKYT ATA UNIVERSITY

Korkyt Ata Kyzylorda University hosted a seminar and training session for its faculty members. The event was organized by the Professional Development and Continuing Education Center as part of a joint project of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

The seminar, held in person at the university, focused on assessing risks associated with climate change. In particular, participants explored approaches to identifying and analyzing risks in such areas as agriculture, water resources management, ecology, and climate-related emergencies.

The seminar was conducted by Adilet Tkenov, an expert with UNDP in Kazakhstan.

During the training, participants were introduced to the key areas of climate change adaptation in Kazakhstan, the stages of preparation for climate risk assessment, and methods for identifying climate risks. They also discussed risk analysis, the application of the “impact chain” approach, and the integration of climate risk assessment results into development plans.

During the practical part of the seminar, participants worked in groups on assignments aimed at identifying and assessing climate risks in the region.

An important aspect of the training was the integration of the knowledge gained into the educational process. Faculty members who completed the training delivered a lecture entitled “Climate Risks and Their Management” to students of the BRV-25-1 study group. In the future, faculty members plan to conduct lectures and practical classes on climate risk assessment for students with the support of UNDP experts.

The initiative is aimed at integrating climate change adaptation issues into the university’s educational programs, enhancing the professional competencies of faculty members, and expanding students’ knowledge of environmental and climate-related challenges.

It should be noted that the seminar was held from September 15th to 18th as part of the project “Integrating climate risks into Kazakhstan’s development planning processes to institutionalize adaptation planning and implement adaptation measures within a coherent national adaptation planning policy”.
