Purpose

The purpose of the project is to study the lives of Ishans, the successors of the Yasawi tradition in the southern regions of Soviet Kazakhstan, using archival data. This includes differentiating between oral histories, state policies, and decrees related to the Ishans. Additionally, the project involves conducting interviews with descendants of the Yasawi tradition and Ishans, and recording audio testimonies.
 

Project objectives


1.  Analyzing the history of Sufism in Soviet Kazakhstan on the example of Yasawi tradition and Ishanism and identifying its data;
2. In the history of Soviet Kazakhstan, the project aims to identify and analyze the soft, moderate, and strict periods of state policy toward Islam, including Sufism. By doing so, it seeks to uncover the reasons for shifts in policy toward Yasawism and Ishanism, explore the characteristics of each period, and assess their consequences;
3. Conducting research in the Central State Archives of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Presidential Archives of the Republic of Kazakhstan, as well as in the funds of the state archives of Turkestan, Kyzylorda, Zhambyl, Almaty and Mangistau regions, as a result of which, determining the state decisions related to Sufism and Yasawism, Ishanism, and the views and resolutions of the Communist Party related to Yasawism, Ishanism;
4. The project aims to identify and analyze the positions and fatwas of the Central Asian and Kazakhstani Muslims Religious Administration (SADUM) and the Kaziyat of Kazakhstan concerning the Yasawi and Ishan traditions during the period of 1943–1990. To achieve this, research will be conducted at the Fundamental Library of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan, the National Library of Uzbekistan, and the Archive and Library of the Administration of Muslims of Uzbekistan;
5. esearch will be conducted in the State Archives of the Russian Federation (GA RF) and the State Archives of Social and Political History of Russia (RGASPI) to access archival documents related to the project topic. This research aims to uncover Soviet authorities decisions regarding Sufism as part of their national policy, thereby determining the states actions directed toward the Yasawi and Ishan traditions;
6. In addition to gathering written data on Yasawi as a historical figure, his mausoleum, and his descendants, including the hoja-ishans who carried on his tradition, the project will collect various oral accounts and conduct interviews with descendants of the hoja-ishans who lived during that period, obtaining audio recordings as well;
7. Conducting a scientific analysis of Sufi stories preserved in oral tradition and memory books written by descendants of the Khoja-ishans, who continued the Yasawi tradition and were revered as saints by the people;
8. Organizing a conference and establishing connections with European, American, and Central Asian scholars who have studied Soviet Islam, such as Paolo Sartori, Allen J. Frank, Eren Tasar, A. Muminov, and B. Babadzhanov, for the exchange of knowledge and experience;

 

Expected results


Using the valuable data collected, the history of Yasawism and Ishanism during the Soviet Kazakhstan period that is significant to Kazakh culture will be thoroughly studied, with the research findings published. The project will also enhance the skills of young researchers in archival research, fieldwork, and data collection. The following outcomes are anticipated:
 
1. 1 (one) article in a peer-reviewed scientific publication indexed in Social Science Citation Index or Arts and Humanities Citation Index of Web of Science database and (or) having 35 (thirty-five) percentile CiteScore in Scopus database or at least 1 (one) article in peer-reviewed scientific publications indexed by the Social Science Citation Index and included in the 1 (first) 2 (second) quartile of the impact factor in the Web of Science database;
 
2. at least 2 (two) articles in a peer-reviewed foreign and (or) domestic publication included in the list provided by the CYSS MES RK;3. The monograph titled History of Sufi Tradition in Soviet Kazakhstan: The Case of Yasawi and Ishanism will be introduced into scientific circulation.The expected results will contribute to the development of research in the field of national and world history, ethnography, and Islamic history in Kazakhstan.
