Purpose

The aim of the project is to conduct a comprehensive theolinguistic study of the religious discourse in the manuscript “Kitab al-Muqaddima” (15th century) by Abu Lais al-Samarkandi, written in Mamluk-Kipchak language, and to identify how religious concepts in the written manuscript are reflected in Kazakh linguistic and cultural cognition. Achieving this aim will enable an in-depth analysis of the medieval manuscript, which provides valuable insights into the origins and lexical features of Turkic languages and will identify its connection to the religious lexicon of the Kazakh language.

Project objectives

1) To work with the original theological written manuscripts in Kipchak language using Arabic script from the Mamluk period (13th–15th centuries), as well as to compile and analyze research by foreign and domestic scholars on medieval theological manuscripts and religious discourse in Kipchak language related to the project topic. As a result, written heritage related to the history, culture, religion, and language of our people will be retrieved from foreign manuscript collections (Turkey, Egypt, etc.), with their versions identified, systematized, and described bibliographically. These manuscripts will be transferred to the national manuscript archives. Additionally, one article will be published in the journal included in the list of journals recommended by the Science and Higher Education Quality Assurance Committee.

2) To work with the original manuscript “Kitab al-Muqaddima Abu Lais al-Samarkandi” written in Kipchak language with religious content, and to conduct a comparative study of the newly discovered Egyptian version, previously unknown, alongside the known Istanbul and Konya versions. As a result, paleographic and codicological analyses will be conducted on all three versions (Egyptian, Istanbul, and Konya), identifying their differences and similarities, and new data related to the manuscript will be collected.

3) To transcribe the Kipchak text of the religious manuscript “Kitab Muqaddima”, written in both classical Arabic and Arabic-script Kipchak, based on the Egyptian version, and to translate it directly from the original language into Kazakh. As a result, the Egyptian version of the manuscript will be translated into Kazakh for the first time, and a full transcription will be prepared. This will provide Turkologists and Mamluk researchers with an opportunity to work directly with the original text. Additionally, one article will be published in the journal recommended by the Science and Higher Education Quality Assurance Committee.

4) To study “Kitab Muqaddima”, the work of the renowned Hanafi jurist Abu Lais al-Samarkandi translated into Kipchak, from a theolinguistic perspective within the framework of anthropocentric and theocentric paradigms, as well as the new theo-anthropocosmic paradigm. As a result, a hermeneutic analysis of the religious text preserved in the written manuscript will be conducted, providing comprehensive information about this Arabic-script Kipchak-language work. Data on the beliefs and religious practices of medieval Turkic peoples will be collected, and the significance of this written heritage within the Turkic world will be established.

5) To conduct a discourse analysis of the Kipchak religious text preserved in the manuscript “Kitab Muqaddima Abu Lais al-Samarkandi”, translated into Kipchak during the Mamluk period. As a result, the place of medieval religious concepts within the Turkic worldview will be identified, and their connection to Islamic culture will be established. The research findings will be published as scientific articles.

6) To conduct a conceptual analysis of the Kipchak religious text in the written manuscript “Kitab Muqaddima Abu Lais al-Samarkandi” as a theolinguistic source, identifying, compiling, and delineating the semantic-informational field of religious concepts. As a result, the reflection of religious concepts preserved in the medieval Kipchak text within Kazakh linguistic and cultural cognition will be identified, and valuable data related to the spiritual culture of Turkic peoples will be gathered. Based on the collected materials, one article will be published in a journal recommended by the Science and Higher Education Quality Assurance Committee, and one article or review will be published in a peer-reviewed scientific journal indexed in the Scopus database with at least the 60th percentile. Additionally, a monograph will be published.

Expected results

- Expected outcomes include a thorough theolinguistic investigation of the manuscript, clarifying how its religious concepts reflect Kazakh linguacultural understanding.
- At least one article or review will be published in a peer-reviewed scientific journal indexed in the Web of Science database, with an impact factor in the 1st or 2nd quartile, or indexed in the Social Science Citation Index, and/or in Scopus with a CiteScore in the 60th percentile or higher.
- At least three articles or reviews will be published in domestic or international scientific journals included in the 1st or 2nd List of publications recommended by the CQAFSHE. Languages, and others.
- the monograph "The Theolinguistic Discourse in the Manuscript 'Kitab Muqaddima Abu Layth as-Samarkandi' (the 13-15th Century)" will be published.

Results

- Within the framework of the project, alongside the manuscript “Kitab Muqaddima of Abu al-Layth al-Samarkandi”, which constitutes the principal object of the study, the collection and systematization of written monuments of religious content created during the Mamluk period in the Turkic-Kipchak language using Arabic script and preserved to the present have been carried out. The study has established that, in addition to the previously known Istanbul and Konya versions of the manuscript, an Egyptian version also exists;

-  Work has been conducted with the original manuscripts of “Kitab Muqaddima of Abu al-Layth al-Samarkandi”, within which the previously unknown Egyptian version has been introduced into scholarly circulation for the first time and subjected to comparative analysis with the known Istanbul version;

- On the basis of the study of the Egyptian and Istanbul versions of the monument “Kitab Muqaddima of Abu al-Layth al-Samarkandi”, a comprehensive corpus of data on the manuscript has been compiled through the application of palaeographic and codicological analysis; a full scholarly description has been prepared, and similarities and differences between the versions have been identified;

-  On the basis of the Egyptian version of the religious monument “Kitab Muqaddima”, a transcription of the Kipchak text has been carried out, and a direct translation from the original language into Kazakh has been performed;

-  A hermeneutic analysis of the monument has been conducted, as a result of which data on the beliefs and religious practices of medieval Turkic peoples have been systematized, and the place of this written heritage within the Turkic world has been determined;

-  One article has been prepared for publication in a peer-reviewed scientific journal ranked in the 1st (Q1) or 2nd (Q2) quartile by impact factor in the Web of Science database, indexed in the Social Science Citation Index, and/or having a CiteScore percentile of not less than 60 in the Scopus database;

- As a result of the conducted research, 4 scientific articles have been placed within the system of journals included in the 1st and 2nd lists of scientific publications recommended by the Committee for Quality Assurance in Science and Higher Education.
