Korkyt Ata University: panel discussion on equal access to justice for women and girls

A significant panel discussion on "Equal access to justice for women and girls: online and offline spaces" was organized at Korkyt Ata University. The event was attended by Jereen Guven, Head of the UN Women Liaison Office for Central Asia and Head of the Kazakhstan Representation.

The Chairman of the Board – Rector, Nauryzbay Baikadamov, opened the meeting, highlighting the university's achievements and the role of women in education and science. Currently, 726 (70%) out of 1047 university staff members are women. Among the over 11,000 students, 7533 (65%) are female.

The Rector emphasized that these figures demonstrate the activity of women in professional and academic spheres, as well as their high potential in science and education. He also noted the successes of female students not only in their studies but also in sports: the university has 2 Masters of Sport of International Class, 13 Masters of Sport of the Republic of Kazakhstan, and 21 Candidates for Master of Sport.

Jereen Guven expressed interest in further academic cooperation with the university, noting that Korkyt Ata University will be the first partner in Kyzylorda.

During the discussion, Jereen Guven delivered a report titled "Promoting gender equality through partnership and influence", discussing UN Women's support for 18 countries and territories in Europe and Central Asia, as well as ongoing work to promote gender equality and prevent violence.

As part of the event, the Vice-Rector for scientific work and international relations, Mainura Buribaeva, spoke about the achievements of women engaged in science at the university. According to her, in 2026, 15 out of 20 recipients of the Rector's grant will be women, and girls are involved in 60% of the 23 ongoing scientific projects.

At the panel discussion, Lyazzat Karzhaubaeva, a senior lecturer in the "Jurisprudence" educational program and Candidate of Legal Sciences, presented a report on "Problems of Gender Inequality". Besides, representatives of the student organization "Kyzjibek" and students shared their thoughts on the topic of "Invisible boundaries of stalking".

The meeting was held in an interactive format, with participants writing their thoughts on women's rights and supporting justice on board.
