Education Without Borders 2: How Is Shughila Nurgaliyeva Experiencing Student Life in Seoul?
Shughila Nurgaliyeva, a sophomore at Korkyt Ata Kyzylorda University, is currently studying at Seoul National University of Science and Technology under the academic mobility program. She shared her impressions and experiences of living in a new country.
From her very first steps in Korea, Shughila was deeply impressed:
“The culture, people, and technology here are much more advanced. Everything is orderly and systematic. I felt it from the very first day,” she says.
The Korean education system is quite different from Kazakhstan’s. Theory always goes hand in hand with practice. Professors prepare thoroughly for each class and deliver material in a clear and structured way.
“Special attention is given to each part of the lesson. We not only analyze every topic but also always do practical tasks. The most interesting part is that group activities are often organized. This greatly helps students interact with each other and better grasp the material,” says Shugyla.
Shugyla also liked the student dormitory. Special attention is paid to safety and cleanliness.
“We don’t have a curfew like in some other places. Students can move around freely even at midnight. The dormitory is modernly equipped, with all necessary conditions provided,” the student shared.
What struck her most in Korean culture is the discipline and respect people show for one another. Whether on public transport, in the streets, or in shops—everyone follows the rules.
“This is something we could learn from. Social discipline directly impacts the quality of life,” she notes.
Shugyla has a basic knowledge of the Korean language, which has been very helpful for her.
“In everyday life, especially in shops, on the bus, or when communicating with friends, knowing the language is important. Learning the language helps to make new friends and actively participate in classes,” she says.
In her free time, the student enjoys walking around the campus with friends and exploring the city’s historical and beautiful places. Although she is interested in K-pop culture, she has not yet attended a concert but plans to do so in the future.
Korean cuisine has also amazed the student.
“My favorite was Seolleongtang, a traditional beef soup. What surprised me the most were the various seafood dishes. The different spices and cooking methods are completely unique,” says Shugyla.
Local students show great interest in Kazakhstan. Most often, they ask about our nature, culture, national dishes, and even traditional clothing.
“Sometimes they are also curious about our history and ask questions. This is a sign of respect and interest in our country,” she says.
Although Shugyla has not yet taken part in major events, she plans to get involved in university projects in the future. She wants to bring back from Korea to Kazakhstan a sense of public order and diligence, student cooperation, and new technologies.
“In the coming months, I hope to gain new knowledge, take part in projects, and make new friends. I would like to bring to Kazakhstan the experience of applying new technologies and methods of managing group projects that I observed in Korea,” she shared.
Academic mobility is not only about studying in a new environment but also about gaining intercultural experience and representing your country abroad. Shugyla Nurgaliyeva is one of those students who aims to use this opportunity effectively and bring fresh perspectives and experiences back home.
It should be noted that currently, 6 of our students are studying at Seoul National University of Science and Technology.
