Adilet Yerlanuly: “This Journey Completely Changed My Perspective”

Adilet Yerlanuly, a 2nd-year student at Korkyt Ata Kyzylorda University, is currently studying in Belgium under the academic mobility program.

According to Adilet, from his very first steps in Europe, he was deeply impressed:

“When I first arrived in Belgium, I was amazed by the beauty here. The nature is green, the air is fresh and invigorating,” he says.

During the selection process, he successfully passed English exams and received an opportunity to study in Belgium. His biggest concern was adaptation. “I thought it would be difficult to communicate with students at the university. But the local students turned out to be very kind, and I made new friends from the very first day,” Adilet shares.

He also noted the differences between the education systems of Belgium and Kazakhstan. “In Kazakhstan, classes last 45 minutes, while here lectures go on for 2–4 hours. We have midterm assessments, whereas in Belgium there are only two exams: one in November and another in January,” he explains.

What impressed him most in the local culture was the country’s multilingualism. In different regions, French, Dutch, and English are spoken. One of the challenges was that all courses were taught entirely in English. “Mathematical terms were particularly difficult. But having Russian-speaking students in my group made it easier,” he adds.

Adilet emphasized that academic mobility gave him a great opportunity:

“This program broadened my outlook. Gaining experience in a new environment allows you to see life from a different perspective,” he says.

From Belgian cuisine, he would like to bring “French fries” back to Kazakhstan, while at home the first thing he wants to eat is meat dishes, especially lagman.

“I have learned a lot here. After returning to Kazakhstan, I plan to use this experience for my future and goals, directing it towards meaningful work,” Adilet concludes.
